UK warning signs and their meanings

A few warning signs are rectangular, such as chevrons on sharp bends and signs for adverse camber. Signs for low bridges show the headroom available; the height is also often shown in metres.

Quick answer

Warning signs tell you about a hazard ahead so you can slow down and prepare. Most are triangles with a red border and a black symbol on white. A plate underneath may give the distance to the hazard or how far it continues. Treat every warning sign as a cue to check your speed and position.
