How we work

Editorial policy

Nothing is published until it has been checked against the official source it depends on.

Quick answer

Every question, guide and fact on The License Desk is written from primary UK sources — The Highway Code, Know Your Traffic Signs and GOV.UK — and each carries the rule or page it depends on. We date every page, log every factual correction publicly, and never let payment influence what we publish.

Which sources do we trust?

We use a strict order of sources. The Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs, as published on GOV.UK, settle any question about rules, signs and road markings. GOV.UK pages run by the DVSA and DVLA settle facts about the test itself — the number of questions, time limits, pass marks, fees and what to bring on the day. Legislation on legislation.gov.uk settles anything those pages leave open.

We do not use other theory test sites, forums or apps as a source for any fact, and we never rewrite another provider’s questions. If two official sources ever disagree, we follow the most recently updated one and say so on the page.

How is a practice question written?

Each question starts from a single rule in The Highway Code or a single sign in Know Your Traffic Signs. We write a question that tests understanding of that rule, one correct answer, and three wrong answers that reflect mistakes learners genuinely make. Every question carries a plain-English explanation and a reference to the rule it tests.

Our questions are original. They are not the DVSA’s revision questions, which are Crown Copyright, and they are not copies of the live test, which is never published. They are written to the same 14-topic syllabus, in the same four-option format, so they train the same knowledge.

How do we fact-check before publishing?

Before any question, guide or fact goes live, each specific claim — a rule number, a speed limit, a stopping distance, a fee, a pass mark — is checked against the primary source on the day it is published. If we cannot confirm a figure from an official source, we leave it out rather than guess. Drafting tools, including AI writing assistants, may be used to prepare material; nothing they produce is published until every fact in it has passed that check.

Pages that state figures about the test show the date those figures were checked, and link the GOV.UK page they come from. Our theory test facts page lists every figure we use in one table, with its source.

When do we update a page?

We re-check affected pages whenever The Highway Code, the theory test format or the test fee changes, and when a reader reports a problem. The “Last reviewed” date on a page changes only when its content has genuinely been re-checked or changed — we never bump dates to look fresh, because a date you cannot trust is worse than an old one.

What triggers a correction?

Any factual error: a wrong answer marked as correct, a wrong rule reference, an out-of-date fee or pass mark, or a guide statement that does not match the official source. We fix confirmed errors as soon as we can and record each one on our public corrections log with the date, what we said, what it says now, and the source that settled it. Spelling fixes and design changes are not logged.

What can money not buy on this site?

No one can pay to change a question, an answer, an explanation or a guide. Our comparison of other theory test products uses prices checked on each provider’s own page, with the check date shown, and we have no commercial relationship with any product we compare. We say plainly when a free or official option is the better choice for you.

If we ever include affiliate links — for example to learner insurance or driving lessons — they will be clearly labelled as affiliate links, marked rel="sponsored", and kept separate from our questions and guides. They will never decide what we recommend.

Who writes and checks the content?

Content is written and checked by the The License Desk team at Elite Digital Ai Solutions Ltd (company number 17250017). We are an independent study resource. We are not driving instructors, and we are not affiliated with or endorsed by the DVSA, the DVLA or any test centre — our material supports your revision; it is not driving instruction or legal advice.

How do our paid products relate to the free site?

The practice questions, mock tests and guides are free, and they stay free. Optional paid products, listed on our pricing page, repackage the same checked material for offline revision. Buying one never changes the answers you see, and we never lock a correction behind a payment.

How can machines and AI tools use our content?

We publish a summary for AI systems at /llms.txt, a full-text version at /llms-full.txt, a Markdown version of every page, and the facts table as CSV. When citing us, please cite the GOV.UK source for official rules and include the date shown on our page — the theory test costs £23 today, but fees and rules change.

How do you contact us?

Email support@thelicensedesk.com. Corrections are genuinely welcome — include the page and a link to the official source and we will check it.
