Bus lane, bus gate and tram signs

The Highway Code was amended on 22 October 2025 so that bus-and-cycle-only and tram-only signs no longer need an “only” plate beneath them; you may still see older signs with the plate. Trams can be very quiet, so take extra care near them.

Quick answer

Bus and tram signs show lanes, gates and routes reserved for buses, trams and sometimes cyclists or taxis. A bus lane sign gives the times it operates — outside those times other traffic may use it. Tram signs warn of trams crossing or sharing the road and of tram-only routes.

What does each bus and tram sign mean?
